In early 2015, WHILE HEAVEN WEPT<\/strong> mainman Tom Phillips<\/strong> had to regrettably pull the plug on the band\u2019s European tour in support of their latest studio album, \u201cSuspended At Aphelion\u201d<\/strong>. The decision led to Phillips<\/strong>\u2019 unexpected retirement from the metal scene, effectively putting the revered doomsters on ice. However, Phillips<\/strong> and his bandmates have long sought to make amends to the European crowds who have so strongly backed WHILE HEAVEN WEPT<\/strong> over the years. Now, as 2018 draws to a close, the most recent incarnation of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT<\/strong> that started with 2009\u2019s classic \u201cVast Oceans Lachrymose\u201d<\/strong> will play its final shows together on a run of European dates that begins November 16 at Germany\u2019s Hammer Of Doom<\/strong> festival.<\/p>\n

\u201cI agreed to do these shows to give everyone else \u2014 the band members, our fans, even myself some closure, especially since the last tour was cancelled,\u201d says Phillips<\/strong>. \u201cThe other aspect is the circumstances and priorities of the musicians involved are simply not aligned with what an actively touring band requires anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cVast Oceans Lachrymose\u201d<\/strong> lineup \u2014 rounded out by bassist Jim Hunter<\/strong>, vocalist Rain Irving<\/strong>, second guitarist Scott Loose<\/strong>, keyboardist\/harmony vocalist Michelle Schrotz<\/strong> and drummer Trevor Schrotz<\/strong> \u2014 have been holed up in a Virginia rehearsal room putting together a setlist that is not only representative of the latest era of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT<\/strong>, but the band\u2019s storied past as well. According to Phillips<\/strong>, some of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT<\/strong>\u2019s most memorable shows have taken place on European shores, including their 2010 appearance at Hammer Of Doom<\/strong> alongside Irish metallers PRIMORDIAL<\/strong>, which was not only Irving\u2019s third show with the band, but also where the \u201cTriumph: Tragedy: Transcendence\u201d<\/strong> DVD\/live album was recorded.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve always had a great time sharing the stage with PRIMORDIAL<\/strong>,\u201d he says. \u201cI think we\u2019ve played with them more than anyone else in our history \u2014 and that\u2019s always been such a great insight into the scope of melancholia and epos. Of course, we\u2019ve also had the great honor of playing with heroes, family and upcoming bands who have gone on to become some of the biggest names out there like ALCEST<\/strong> and GHOST<\/strong>. Most of all though, it\u2019s connecting directly with the people who really care about what we do and again, that\u2019s what these upcoming shows are really about.\u201d<\/p>\n

The shows will offer another treat for fans \u2014 a limited-edition shirt commemorating the 30th<\/sup> anniversary of the band. \u201cIt\u2019s an exclusive design by Gustavo Sazes<\/strong>, who has done the covers for our last couple of albums,\u201d says Phillips<\/strong>. \u201cThere\u2019s quite a few layers to the design and it definitely correlates to \u2018Fear Of Infinity\u2019<\/strong> and \u2018Suspended At Aphelion\u2019<\/strong>. Personally, I think it turned out amazing and while it does represent our 30th anniversary, for now, it will be available exclusively at the concerts.\u201d `<\/p>\n

While these European dates signal the end for the \u201cVast Oceans Lachrymose\u201d<\/strong> era of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT<\/strong>, it does not mean the end for the band. Phillips<\/strong> says there is an entire album of unfinished material that sits between \u201cFear Of Infinity\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cSuspended At Aphelion\u201d<\/strong> in which he may look to finalize at some point.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the end, I\u2019d started on a solo project prior to being involved with the WALPYRGUS<\/strong> album [2017\u2019s \u2018Walpyrgus Nights\u2019<\/strong>], but with the WHILE HEAVEN WEPT<\/strong> shows coming up, I haven\u2019t even looked at that again. But for WHILE HEAVEN WEPT<\/strong>, as long as I\u2019m breathing, WHILE HEAVEN WEPT<\/strong> exists, even if the lineup changes for the nth time or we are strictly DIY on a small, independent scale. Only time will tell. For now, it\u2019s time to commemorate a milestone and the end of an era!\u201d<\/p>\n
