Firebrand Canadian epic doomsters SMOULDER will release the \u201cDream Quest Ends\u201d EP next March via Cruz Del Sur Music.
The follow-up to this year\u2019s critically acclaimed \u201cTimes of Obscene Evil and Wild Daring\u201d will feature two new songs, a cover of MANILLA ROAD\u2019s \u201cCage Of Mirrors\u201d, as well as all three cuts from the band\u2019s debut 2018 \u201cThe Sword Woman\u201d demo, including, for the first time on vinyl, their cover of NIGHTMARE\u2019s \u201cThe Queen Is Gone\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\u201cDream Quest Ends\u201d marks the end of a chapter for SMOULDER. The EP\u2019s two original\ncompositions, \u201cDream Quest Ends\u201d and \u201cWarrior Witch Of Hel\u201d, was written by drummer\nKevin Hester several years ago and accordingly were molded into a \u201cmore\nSMOULDER-esque\u201d sound, complete with more lead guitars and choir-like vocal\nparts. Both serve as a milestone for SMOULDER \u2014 they are the last remaining\nsongs from the band\u2019s demo and \u201cTimes of Obscene Evil and Wild Daring\u201d period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


\n\u201cI don\u2019t think these songs are what anyone will expect; we\nzigged instead of zagged,\u201d notes singer Sarah Ann. \u201cOn a production front,\nwe dialed it back a bit to make it sound more raw and unusual to\nmatch both the MANILLA ROAD track and the fact that a reprint of our demo is on\nthe B-side of the vinyl. As for the A-side, what can we say? It\u2019s unusual and\nboth of the new tracks are slower. They are somewhat\nmore bluesy and psychedelic within the context of power metal or epic\ndoom, and I think that they fit very well alongside \u2018Cage of Mirrors\u2019.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the title track, we do more\nexperimentation with quiet acoustic parts, dueling vocals and top it off with a\nhugely epic triumphant end that sounds like a battering ram,\u201d she\ncontinues. \u201cThe song lyrically revolves around a warrior sorceress who travels\nto an alien world to battle her titan nemesis in his sky castle, and Adam\n[Blake, bass] and I sing from the perspective of the titan and the sorceress to\ndrive the epic-ness home. Meanwhile, \u2018Warrior Witch of Hel\u2019 starts out on this\nlurching, dark note with a repeating riff and lower register vocals. Once we\nget into the segments about the character \u2014 who is on a quest to free a castle\nfull of slaves and cast the sorcerer presiding over it to Hel \u2014 it becomes much\nmore upbeat and driving.\u201d

\nThe members of SMOULDER had been kicking the idea around to cover a MANILLA\nROAD song ever since guitarist Collin Wolf and Hester joined the band. After\nleader MANILLA ROAD Mark Shelton\u2019s untimely passing in July 2018, SMOULDER\ndecided to move forward with a cover to honor his memory.

\n\u201c\u2018Cage Of Mirrors\u2019 is my absolute favorite track by the band and I\u2019ve wanted to\ncover it for a long time so it was not a hard decision,\u201d says guitarist Shon Vincent.\n\u201cWith its simple yet powerful structure, emotional vocal delivery and epic\nstory-driven occult sword and sorcery lyrics, it was a perfect fit for us\nthematically. Sarah worked hard to match Mark\u2019s wavering, unusual delivery,\nalong with his growls, screams and laughs.\u201d

\nThe March release of \u201cDream Quest Ends\u201d will coincide with the band\u2019s\nappearance at the Up The Hammers and Horns Up festivals in Greece, as well as a\nspot at the Hell\u2019s Heroes festival in Texas and Headbanger\u2019s Open Air in\nGermany. After that, SMOULDER is going to give their collective creative\nbatteries some time to recharge.
