Cruz Del Sur Music, the label responsible for releasing HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE\u2019s brilliant 2003 opus, \u201cThe August Engine\u201d, is proud to announce a January (20) 2023 vinyl release of the band\u2019s new \u201cOvertaker\u201d studio album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The band\u2019s first album in six years, founding member, guitarist and songwriter John Cobbett cites a change in direction in style he notes as \u201cpsychedlic thrash.\u201d

The album features a revamped HAMMERS lineup that includes the return of Jamie Myers (vocalist and bassist in \u201cThe Locust Years\u201d lineup) and the former rhythm section of VEKTOR, Blake Anderson and Frank Chin. Cobbett started work on \u201cOvertaker\u201d as early as 2018. Initially, Overtaker wasn\u2019t supposed to be a HAMMERS album but a thrash side-project and was influenced by Cobbett and partner Sigrid Sheie\u2019s work on VH\u00d6L\u2019s \u201cDeeper Than Sky\u201d (2015).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen my family moved to Montana in 2016, my inclination was to continue expanding on this sound,\u201d Cobbett said. \u201cInitially, there was no intention of putting it out as HAMMERS or VH\u00d6L. Everyone was so busy, and we were suddenly far away from our usual co-conspirators. But that changed as the album developed and old friends returned to the fold. \u2018Overtaker\u2019 is fast, furious, psychedelic and progressive. But it\u2019s different from other progressive metal in true Hammers fashion.\u201d

Like all the Hammers material that preceded it, Overtaker defies genres and labels. The sound is a combination of \u201970s prog and furious \u201980s thrash. The result is something that\u2019s never been done before \u2014 a mix of King Crimson\u2019s \u201cIn The Court Of The Crimson King\u201d and Slayer\u2019s \u201cReign In Blood\u201d. \u201cOvertaker\u201d was put together during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic and survived Anderson\u2019s serious wrist injury in a scooter accident, which led to a year-plus recovery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


\u201cOvertaker\u201d was recorded both in home studios and Steve Albini\u2019s Electrical Audio studios in Chicago with Sanford Parker engineering. Drums, piano and timpani were tracked during a four-day session at Electrical Audio in 2021; the remaining material was recorded via home studios, including vocals and Sigrid Sheie\u2019s mighty Hammond B3 organ.

Originally scheduled as an independent release on CD format this December, Corbett is excited to be working with his old friends at Cruz Del Sur Music on the \u201cOvertaker\u201d vinyl edition.
